With five exhibit halls display artworks from around the world. Luke Air Force Base, the premier training ground for the nation’s F-16 fighter pilots is just south of Surprise and Lake Pleasant, one of Arizona’s largest man-made lakes, is to the north. Despite the pressures of rapid growth and a sagging economy, a hardworking mayor, council and professional city staff, are clearly focused on the future – creating a city where residents love to live, work and play – while preserving the diverse, multicultural, and inter-generational neighborhoods that make Surprise special.
Much of Surprise was built up since 2000. The 2005-2006 real estate bubble burst resulting in many homes going to short sale or foreclosure, and now low prices on nearly new resale homes. Several builders slowed building, but now are back on track with selling new homes in their subdivisions. Taylor Morrison and Beazer are selling homes at Surprise Farms and K. Hovnanian is building at Marley Park. The 303 freeway is being completed soon and will link Surprise to I-10 on the south and I-17 to the east.
